How To Stop Black People from Laughing At Me
Posted November 02, 2018 05:20:37For years, the world has been watching us with a mix of amusement and disgust.
The latest victim of this phenomenon was Jennifer Aniston.
After the actress, who starred in the hit movie “Frozen” made a joke about the “brown ochre hair” she had recently received from a white man, many in the US began to notice.
For Jennifer Anistons’ blackness, it has been an easy way to offend.
In an interview with Esquire magazine, Aniston admitted that the reaction was “horrifying”.
“I don’t think I have ever said it with such a tone of voice,” she said.
“It’s like, ‘You’re not funny, you’re not good enough for me’.
It’s the worst.
I mean, it’s like you’re a fucking racist.”
She continued: “It just comes with the territory, it doesn’t come from me.
I don’t get it.”
Aniston has since issued a statement saying: “I am very sorry.
I never meant any of it, and I do not condone it in any way.”
The comments came after an article in the New York Post about the comedian, who is married to actor Josh Gad.
“I know I’m not the first black person to be attacked for making a joke, but I’m going to stand up for myself,” Aniston said in the interview.
“What’s so funny about this is it’s not about me.
It’s not even about me, because I am an actress, and my job is to be funny.
If you want to see someone doing something funny, come see them.
You know, ‘Look, it was a joke.’
But you know what?
If you’re going to do it, you better be funny, because if you don’t, people are going to say it’s a racist joke.”
But while the world watched with amusement and disgusted, Jennifer Anismans blackness has come back to haunt her.
According to a study published in 2017, black people are “more likely to be judged for their appearance than for their mental health”.
The study by the US Department of Health and Human Services found that black Americans were “more than twice as likely as white Americans to be considered ‘depressed’ or ‘mood disorders'” in the same year.
It was a particularly stark statistic, given that a recent study published by the Pew Research Center found that one in three black people had been physically assaulted, compared to one in five white Americans.
As part of the study, researchers surveyed a representative sample of 1,000 people from across the United States.
They found that while black Americans have “more severe psychological distress” than white Americans, they “were also more likely to have depression, anxiety, and other mood disorders, compared with white Americans”.
Aniston’s reaction has caused much consternation in the black community.
In response to the article, actress Latoya Ferguson released a video in which she claimed Aniston was “trying to be white”.
“She’s trying to be black,” she wrote.
“I know it sounds like she’s not, but she is.
She’s trying not to be a part of it.”
However, while the backlash against Aniston’s response was fierce, some have argued that it may actually have been necessary.
“The reaction to Jennifer Anis joke was not enough to stop the racist comments,” said Aniston in a statement to The Times.
“There is a systemic racism that exists in our society and has a devastating impact on our lives and on people of colour, so I hope we can find a way to overcome that.”
